DIMENSION STONES IN THE XXI CENTURY
 Brazilian Situation

- Sector’s Picture

Brazilian sector’s picture can be depicted by the production of 500 commercial varieties of rocks, among granites, marbles, slates, quartzites, travertines soapstone, basalt, serpentinites, clusters, talc stone and materials such as Miracema stone, Cariri stone and Morisca stone, deriving from almost 1,300 mining fronts. Granites make up approximately 60% of the Brazilian production, while 20% are related to marbles and travertines and almost 8% to slates. ver tabela

The Brazilian dimension stones sector turns over approximately US$ 2.1 billion/year, including domestic and external trading and machines, equipment, inputs, consumption materials and services transactions, generating circa 105 thousand direct jobs in approximately 10,000 companies. The domestic market is responsible for almost 90% of the commercial transactions and marble workshops represent 65% of the total companies within the sector.

Dimension stones blocks unfolding in Brazil is made specially by means of looms. The processing industry operates with almost 1,600 looms, and has a sawing capacity estimated at 40 million m2/year.

- Production

Brazilian's rocks extraction totals 5.2 million tons/year. Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais and Bahia States are responsible for 80% of the domestic production. Espírito Santo state is the major producer with 47% of the Brazilian total. Minas Gerais is the second major producer and is responsible for the biggest diversity of extracted rocks. ver tabela

- Exports

ver tabela
Considering the 26 NCM’s discriminated in this work, for the dimension stones accommodation Brazilian exports during 2000 reached US$ 271.54 million and 1.1 million tons, having a positive variation of respectively 16.8% (in value) and 12% (in volume) compared to 1999.

Processed rocks represented 25.3% in weight and 56.5% in value of these exports during 2000, showing evidence of the biggest growth rates compared to 1999. In 1999, approximately 71% of processed rocks exports, in value, had as destination the US, while to Italy it was remitted 40% in bulk rocks weight, characterizing a very high concentration of sales for these two markets.

It must be stressed a continuous increase of Brazilian exports during the whole nineties. The US$ 100 million barrier was surpassed in 1993 and the US$ 200 million achieved in 1997. The trend reported as of 1996 shows a decrease in bulk silicate rocks exports and the small expression of bulk carbonate rocks.

During 1999, Brazil had a 0.3% participation in bulk carbonate rocks (marble blocks, position 25.15) worldwide exports, 9.9% in bulk silicate rocks (granite blocks, position 25.16), 1.3% in simple processed rocks (mettle for floors and paving, position 68.01), 1.4% in special processed rocks (marble and granite products, position 68.02) and 5.6% in slates (position 68.03), making 4.9% of the worldwide exchange physical volume.

This performance ranks Brazil as the sixth biggest rocks exporter worldwide in physical volume, after Italy, China, India, Spain and Portugal and ahead of South Africa, Turkey, South Korea, Greece, Finland and Germany. Regarding bulk granites, Brazil ranks in fourth place with 9.9%, after India (18.2%), South Africa (11.7%) and China (10.4%), ranking in 12th in processed rocks worldwide exports.

An expressive growth in slates and foliated quartzites exports was noticed, as well as soapstone and serpentinites stakes in the exports. Such materials, characterized by the regional production and processing, already represented 13.6% in value and 10.4% in weight of Brazilian rocks exports during 2000. ver tabela

The exports of Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais and Bahia, which are the main producing states, totaled approximately US$ 210 million in 2000. Espírito Santo consolidated its position as the main producer and exporter, accounting in 2000 for 44%, in weight and value, of the total Brazilian exports. Rio de Janeiro had one of the most expressive export growths of processed rocks.

It is declining, in weight and value, since 1998, Minas Gerais’ total exports and specially granitic rocks, which have their businesses centered on blocks sales to major Italian buyers. This decrease was reduced by the expressive growth in slates and foliated quartzites, that in 2000 already represented 47.9%, in value, of the Minas Gerais’ rocks export.

A less acute, but similar situation is noticed to Bahia, whose exports were surpassed by Rio de Janeiro in 2000. The value aggregation issue of the processed products can be exemplified here, because in weight Rio de Janeiro exported 32% of Bahia’s total, while in value, Rio de Janeiro’s exports were 5% higher than the Bahia ones.

During 1999, processed rocks represented 16.3% of the total exported in physical volume, while in value, corresponded to 47.6% of the revenues.
During 2000, processed rocks represented 25.3% in weight and 56.5% in value of the exports.

While 1999 the processed rocks exports matched the blocks in value, in 2000 semi-elaborated products exports have already surpassed raw material, characterizing the desired change in the export industry’s profile.

The better performance of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro with processed granitic rocks export, as well as of Minas Gerais with slates and foliated quartzites, is ballasted on the existence of processing industrial complexes and on a competitiveness basis set up for finished/semi-finished products within the domestic market. Such attributes leaded to making feasible even the granite blocks exports increase by the Espírito Santo State, being such exports no longer ruled anymore by great exclusivity contracts.

- Imports

During 2000 Brazilian imports totaled US$ 21.9 million and recorded a 10.0% decrease compared to 1999, reverting a strong increase trend throughout all the nineties. Most of the imports is applied to marbles and travertines slabs, specially those proceeding from Italy, Spain and Greece.
ver tabela

Imports growth during the nineties was due to import tax rates decrease, supplying a lack of offer for the high standard real estate market, since that the Brazilian marble production is limited regarding variety and quantity. The decreases reported during 1999 and 2000 were the outcome of the exchange devaluation fostered at the beginning of 1999.

- Domestic Consumption

The marble and granite blocks apparent domestic consumption, according to official data provided by the “Sumário Mineral Brasileiro” (Brazilian Mineral Summary), was 1.67 million tons in 1999, with a 19.7% growth compared to 1998. These 1999 amounts would be equivalent to 18.3 million m2/year and would correspond to 3.5% slabs worldwide consumption, being translated into a per capita consumption ranging between 7 and 8 kg/year of marbles and granites. Nevertheless, if one considers the actual marble and granites blocks production estimated in this work, as well as the other rocks varieties exploited in Brazil, the domestic consumption will reach out for circa 50 million m2/year, equivalent to 25 kg per capita.
